Extracurricular activities: Allowing children to discover themselves

Extracurricular activities are typically offered through after-school programs, community organizations, or private organizations.  There are several benefits children receive in participating in extracurricular activities.  The activities can range from sports, music, art, charitable causes, and many more.

Extracurricular activities are credited for benefiting children with:
  • Juvenile delinquency reduction
  • Drug and alcohol abuse reduction
  • School dropout reduction
Extracurricular activities foster several more benefits for children including:
  • Self-esteem enhancement
  • Talent development
  • Sense of achievement
  • Mental health improvement
  • Teamwork and coordination
  • Creativity
  • Social awareness
  • Value of familial and extended relationships
  • Communication skills
  • Cognitive enhancement
  • Self-discipline
  • Sympathy and empathy
Extracurricular activities have benefits that extend far beyond filling the gap of time between school and evening hours with family.  Extracurricular activities can challenge children, allow them to discover their personal and future professional interests, and make contributions to the community.
