Teaching that there is more than appearance

There was an article on the Huffington Post called How To Talk To Little Girls.  Having a little girl, I was naturally interested in this article.  Read it.

From the start it had me realize how often I point out my daughters appearance more than other qualities.  With statements like:
  • Nice dress
  • You have wonderful hair!
  • You are adorable
  • Don't you just look precious
Among many other things I say.  I felt guilty.  There is more to my daughter than her appearance.  She needs to hear it from me.

So, what other things can we say to praise our daughters so that we don't build an overly-beauty conscious child.  We can do things like:
  • Praise her when she draws an amazing picture
  • Let her know when she says something impressive
  • Tell her how much you love her
  • Reward her for completing homework
  • Praise her ability to an activity (such as gymnastics, running, or whatever it may be)
  • Spend time with her
  • And so on...
Most of all, make sure you let her know that you love her no matter how she looks.  That she will always be beautiful to you, despite what the media may say.

Remember, try to point out other things besides appearance to your daughter.
