How do I know if my child needs to be tested in school?

There a number of reasons for testing a child within the schools. In addition to standardized testing, some children may need additional testing to determine what classroom environment is most appropriate for the child. A couple of reasons for additional testing are as follows:

  • Suspicion of a learning disorder
  • Suspicion of ADHD or ADD
How do you know if having your child tested is the right thing to do?

If your child has very severe difficulites in school overall or just in one subject since beginning school then it is possible that your child may have a learning disorder. In addition, if your child has an inability to pay attention, follow directions, complete a task or sit still your child may have some form of ADHD. It is important to communicate with your child's teacher to learn what your child is like in school. Often times, teachers will be able to recognize if your child is in need of a different classroom environment.
It is also important to remember that the severity of these traits must be greater than what occurs at developmental age. For example, a young child is going to have a hard time sitting still and staying focused because they are still developing. As parents (and teachers) we must be able to recognize what behavior is normative due to age and what behavior is extreme.
