Book Review--Harry the Happy Caterpillar Grows: Helping Children Adjust to Change

One of our readers recently had a picture book published that is geared towards helping children cope with change and she has asked me to review it on this blog. The book is titled Harry the Happy Caterpillar Grows: Helping Children Adjust to Change written by Cindy Jett.

This picture book is a fantastic way to help our children have a greater understanding about the role of change in our lives and how to handle those changes.

The story is about a caterpillar named Harry who loves being a caterpillar. It comes time for he and his friends to make the change from caterpillar to butterfly and while Harry's friends are excited for the change Harry is not. Harry vows to remain a caterpillar because he does not want anything to change; however, as time goes on Harry discovers that things have changed. As he gains the courage to make the change from caterpillar to butterfly he discovers that he really likes being a butterfly!

In addition to being a great story with a wonderful message there are tips in the back for children as well as tips for parents and teachers about how to react to change.

Change is an inevitable part of life therefore, it is crucial that we teach our children how to cope with change in a healthy way. It is important that we help our children understand that feelings of fear go away, that good things come from change, new situations have positive outcomes and so on and so forth. It is important to work with our children in helping them understand how to adjust to change so that as they go on through their lives, times of change will not be a hindrance to them.

This book is an excellent tool to use when teaching your children about change. Reading books like this one to your child provides the benefits of reading and literacy while at the same time giving you the opportunity to teach your child a valuable lesson about adjusting to change.
