Ten Steps For Healthy Toddlers

A recent reader referred me to the website www.littlepeoplesplates.co.uk where tips are provided in helping our young children develop healthy eating habits. The following are ten steps that are suggested:

  • Eat together as a family and make mealtimes relaxed, happy occasions
  • Decide which foods to offer but let your toddler decide how much to eat
  • Offer foods from all 5 food groups every day
  • Have a routine and offer 3 meals and 2 snacks each day
  • Offer 6-8 drinks a day
  • Give vitamins A & D each day
  • Respect your toddlers tastes and preferences--don't force feed
  • Reward your toddler with attention--never use food and drink as reward or treats
  • Limit unhealthy foods and snacks
  • An hour of active play every day and about 12 hours of sleep
Using these steps can help our toddlers be healthy and develop the habits they need to remain healthy throughout their lives.
