Teaching Children Safety

In an ever dangerous world it is important that we teach our children how to be safe. It is impossible for us to constantly watch over them and keep them sheltered from the world; therefore, we must teach them how to keep themselves safe.

When do we start teaching our children safety? How do we teach them to remain safe?

It is important to start teaching safety as soon as possible, generally when your baby begins crawling. At this point teaching basic safety such as to not touch a hot stove, etc. is what you should focus on. During the toddler years you should begin teaching your child to not cross the street without permission, wait for a parent to go into a store and so forth. It is around the time that our children begin to be capable of understanding, repeating and following rules (usually around the age of 3 or 4) that we should really start emphasizing safety rules so that our children will be able to remain safe when we are not around. It is important to make sure that your children know their own first and last name as well as your first and last name, the name of the street you live on, what to do if separated from you, and so forth. It is also important to begin teaching fire safety during these preschool years. Having home fire drills is an excellent idea to ensure that your children know exactly what to do in case of a fire.

These are just a few examples of the various aspects of safety we should teach our children. The world can be a scary place and as parents we will not always be able to protect our children so we must teach them to be able to protect themselves. It is never to early to start teaching safety!

How do you teach your children safety? We would love to hear from you.
