Teaching Our Children to Overcome Adversity

Challenges and adversity are a part of life. We all face trials, and our children will all face trials throughout their lives. How do we prepare our children for such times? Here are some suggestions:

  • Teach children to remain hopeful
  • Emphasize that adversity provides learning opportunities
  • Listen to your children
  • Help your children come up with solutions but don't solve their problems for them
These ideas come from the article "Hope for Kids-Teaching Our Children to Overcome Adversity," by Jennifer Shakeel

In addition to the suggestions listed above, I think the most significant thing that we can do as parents in helping our children overcome adversity is to keep an eternal perspective and to teach our children to have an eternal perspective as well. Consider the following quote by President James E. Faust:

"Into every life there come the painful, despairing days of adversity and buffeting. There seems to be a full measure of anguish, sorrow, and often heartbreak for everyone, including those who earnestly seek to do right and be faithful. The thorns that prick, that stick in the flesh, that hurt, often change lives which seem robbed of significance and hope. This change comes through a refining process which often seems cruel and hard. In this way the soul can become like soft clay in the hands of the Master in building lives of faith, usefulness, beauty, and strength. For some, the refiner's fire causes a loss of belief and faith in God, but those with an eternal perspective understand that such a refining is part of the perfection process."

How do we help our children have an eternal perspective? By having one ourselves. Children watch what their parents do and say so if we strive to have an eternal perspective our children will see that, and it will have an impact on them.
