Creating the Appropriate Zone for Teaching

As parents, it is our responsibility to teach and lead our children along the developmentally appropriate pathway. In order to do so we must develop the appropriate zone in which teaching can take place.

How do we help create the appropriate zone?
The most important thing we can do is develop a close connection with our child. The relationship must come before teaching can occur.

Berk (2001) states that to develop a close relationship you must be stimulating, attentive, confirmatory, interpretive, and highly supportive." Be involved with your child and spend time with them. Watch this video clip to see one father's way of having fun with his child and creating the appropriate zone through the development of the relationship.
